Who it's for

  • You are named personal representative in a will, or you are applying to be appointed, for someone who lived in Michigan.
  • You are doing this for the first time and want the legal deadlines and the order of the work in one place.
  • You want to keep clear records for the beneficiaries and, where required, for the Probate court in the county where the deceased lived.
  • You may also be working with an attorney and want to stay organized and keep costs under control.

How the documents work together

  1. Read the user guide first: it explains the role, the route and the deadlines, and tells you which file to use at each step.
  2. Enter the date of death in the workbook. Each legal deadline then appears with its due date, legal basis and official link.
  3. Send the notification letters from the three template files and log each one in the Contacts and Letters tab.
  4. Record every asset, debt, receipt and payment in the workbook. The estate account balance is checked against your bank balance.
  5. When the waiting periods have passed and debts are dealt with, the Distributions tab works out each beneficiary's entitlement and the receipt form closes the loop.

Route check

Not every estate in Michigan needs the full court process. These are the routes the guide explains:

RouteWhen it may apply
Small estate: Affidavit of Decedent's SuccessorThe estate, less liens and encumbrances, does not exceed the small estate amount ($53,000 for deaths on or after 1 January 2026; $51,000 for deaths in 2025), it includes no real property, at least 28 days have passed since death, and no application or petition for a personal representative is pending or granted.
Small estate: Petition and Order for AssignmentThe gross estate does not exceed the small estate amount ($53,000 for deaths on or after 1 January 2026).
Informal probateThe estate exceeds the small estate amount (or includes real property needing transfer) and there is no dispute requiring a judge.
Formal probateThere is a dispute, a question about the will, or an interested person asks for a judge to decide.

Check the current threshold on the official source before relying on a simplified route.

What's not included

  • Legal advice on your situation, or answers to questions about a specific estate.
  • Official court or tax forms: they are free on the official websites, and the guide links to them.
  • Filing, submitting or checking documents for you.
  • Tax calculations for your estate: the workbook records the amounts you obtain from the tax authority or your adviser.

Questions about this kit

Do I need a lawyer to act as personal representative in Michigan?

Michigan courts provide SCAO forms that self-represented people can use, and county courts say court staff cannot give legal advice and recommend talking to an attorney for questions or complicated cases. The guide's section on professional help lists situations where speaking to an attorney is wise.

Is there a simpler process for small estates in Michigan?

Small estate: Affidavit of Decedent's Successor: The estate, less liens and encumbrances, does not exceed the small estate amount ($53,000 for deaths on or after 1 January 2026; $51,000 for deaths in 2025), it includes no real property, at least 28 days have passed since death, and no application or petition for a personal representative is pending or granted. The successor completes and notarizes PC 598 and delivers it to whoever holds the property (it is not filed with the court). The route check in the guide compares every route, with its legal basis and official source.

Which deadlines does the Michigan workbook calculate?

The workbook calculates every statutory deadline in the guide from the dates you enter, including: Small estate affidavit can only be used after a waiting period (28 days from the date of death); Serve Notice of Appointment and Duties of Personal Representative (PC 573) on all interested persons (14 days from the appointment or grant); Creditors must present claims (4 months from the first notice to creditors); Mail notice to known creditors (PC 578) (4 months from the first notice to creditors). Federal deadlines are included too.
